The communication jammer is the oldest electronic warfare system. In 1902 and 1903, during the Royal Navy and U.S. Navy fleet exercises, the military used communications jamming for the first time. In 1904, during the Russo-Japanese War, a Russian radio technician used his equipment to interfere with the communications of the Japanese Navy during an attack on Port Arthur.
As radio stations became more and more widely used in World War I and World War II, the army also sought to develop dedicated communications jammers to disrupt enemy communications. In response to the increasing popularity of jammers, radio stations have begun to have electronic protection functions, especially frequency hopping and other spread spectrum technologies. In the technological competition of radio jammer development and anti-jamming innovation for decades, jammers have always maintained their effectiveness.
Communication jamming systems are mainly used to counter tactical communication systems to prevent the enemy from conducting command and control. The targets ranged from simple push-to-talk radio to data links in air defense networks. Many of these jammers are slightly bulky and require dedicated ground vehicles and aircraft for loading.
By the 1990s, communication interference began to focus on integrating multiple jammers, and adopted "smart" jamming technology that no longer relied on pure suppression. New technologies with low SWaP have also prompted the development of miniaturized long-range unmanned communication jammers, such as those developed under DARPA's "WolfPack" program in the early 2000s.
War accelerates the development of jammers
In 2005, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan accelerated the development of new communication jammers, which are used for self-defense against RCIED instead of offensive communication jamming to destroy the enemy's command and control network. Such jammers are smaller, more automated, and large in number. This is a major change in the traditional communications interference market.
In recent years, starting in 2015, the emergence of low-cost commercial drones has promoted the demand for new communications electronic warfare systems (anti-UAS jammers). These systems have much in common with RCIED jammers in terms of frequency coverage and SWaP usage.
However, its antennas are usually directional, and many anti-UAS jammers are integrated with other sensors (and sometimes other countermeasure systems) as part of a multi-band anti-UAS solution.
