This auction plays a critical role in expanding mobile network coverage, especially in rural and underserved areas. The 700 MHz spectrum is favored globally for its long-range and high-penetration capabilities, which improve service quality in both urban and remote locations.
State-run Viettel Group, which won the B2-B2′ band in May 2025 after two rounds of bidding, is not eligible to participate in this latest auction. That license also spans 15 years and will support Viettel’s push for nationwide 4G and 5G connectivity, including Internet of Things (IoT) applications like smart cities, intelligent transport systems, and precision agriculture.
Interested operators must confirm their eligibility within 30 days of the official auction notice. The reallocation of the 700 MHz band follows Vietnam’s switch from analog to digital TV broadcasting, which freed up the spectrum for mobile telecommunications.
In January 2025, Viettel reported reaching 4 million 5G subscribers just months after its initial October 2024 rollout. Its 5G service currently operates through a network of 6,500 base stations, offering speeds of up to 1 Gbps and near-zero latency. The telco plans to add over 20,000 5G base stations by the end of 2025 and aims to cover 99% of the population by 2030.
Viettel also operates two 5G labs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, where developers can test and refine new 5G and IoT technologies for local deployment. Its 5G infrastructure supports both standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) architectures and is tailored for over 130 use cases across industries such as logistics, healthcare, education, agriculture, and energy.
Competitors, VNPT and MobiFone, have also entered the 5G race. VNPT launched its service in December 2024, while MobiFone followed in March 2025 using the 3.8–3.9 GHz frequency band. Both networks offer a combination of NSA and SA 5G deployment models.
Vietnam’s renewed 700 MHz auction is expected to attract new bids from operators seeking to expand their mobile footprints and enhance digital infrastructure across the country.
